By Kristin Control is probably the farthest thing in your mind when you think about anxiety or fell under its attack. That irrational fear devoid of logic and full of worry can be so controlling that you may forget your own ability to master it. But with medical help and medications, you can control anxiety and how it affects you. And it is not all in the mind either. Controlling anxiety means managing the triggers and having the strength to overcome the physical symptoms. Here are some tips that can help you increase your control over anxiety:
1. Decide when and where you want to worry. Most people suffering from anxiety attacks complain that they cannot control their worrying. However, the truth is, they have not decided yet to control it. Pick a time and place when and where you will allow yourself to worry about everything that makes you anxious. Spend an hour of worrying in the bedroom. But instead of worrying about the things that might happen, direct your thought to things that are happening. When your hour is up, give yourself a mental shake and try to avoid worrying throughout the day. 2. Eat small but frequent meals with stress-reducing components. Eating three square meals a day can cause your metabolism to slow down and make you feel sluggish. Opt for six small meals throughout the day that are rich in stress-fighting components. Foods like dried apricots, broccoli, bananas, leafy greens, brown rice, whole grains, yogurt, and salmon are rich in B vitamins, calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus which fight stress and keep anxiety at bay. 3. Limit or eliminate intake of caffeine-rich and alcohol-based products. People who are prone to anxiety attacks are highly sensitive to caffeine and alcohol. This means that even minimal intake can trigger an anxiety attack. Ditch your caffeine fix and alcohol for more invigorating and healthier drinks like fresh fruit juices and smoothies. Instead of dehydrating your body like alcohol and caffeine do, these drinks will rehydrate you and make you feel rejuvenated. 4. Simplify your life. Simplifying your life can be as easy as taking goals that are not that important to you right now off your priority list. Clean up as you finish one task instead of piling chores until they become too much to bear. Avoid over-scheduling and taking too many responsibilities at home or in the office. These actions can help reduce stress and pressure which can make you anxious. 5. Practice stress and anxiety-busting regimens. There are many regimens out there that are guaranteed to reduce anxiety. Meditation and yoga work well in clearing your mind of negative thoughts that contribute to anxiety. Daily exercise is one of the most potent treatments for anxiety symptoms. Go hiking, swimming, or whatever it is that you enjoy. Aside from exercise, dry skin-brushing and taking warm baths also help calm frazzled nerves by relieving tension in the body. You can also try getting a massage to reduce stress. Kristine Anne Gonzaga is a content writer and researcher who specializes in health topics and health-related issues.
